Mil-spec CNC machining capability range
What we can route to matched suppliers: 3 to 5 axis milling and CNC turning in aluminum, stainless, titanium, tool steel and engineering plastics, down to ±0.005 mm, with mil-spec finishes and full traceability. Every figure below is the range of RFQs we match, confirmed part by part through the supplier's DFM review and FAI.
Tolerance
Tolerance and process capability
Tolerances are held on CNC machining centres with 3, 4 and 5 axis milling plus CNC turning. The tighter figures apply to features that suit them: short bores, ground-quality shafts, flat datum faces. Long thin walls, deep pockets and hardened steel pull the achievable tolerance back toward the typical row.
GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS is accepted: flatness, perpendicularity, parallelism, true position, runout, total runout and profile of surface. Inspection is on CMM with a full FAI report on first articles. See quality and inspection.
| Linear tolerance (best) | ±0.005 mm |
|---|---|
| Linear tolerance (typical) | ±0.01 mm |
| Bore fit (best) | H6 |
| Shaft fit (best) | h5 |
| IT grade (best) | IT5 |
| Surface finish (best) | Ra 0.8 µm |
| Surface finish (typical) | Ra 1.6 µm |
| Angular tolerance | 10 arcmin |
| Threads (metric) | 5H/5g, 6H/6g |
| Threads (imperial) | 2B/2A, 3B/3A |
| ISO 2768 grade | f / H (fine / fine) |
| Inspection | CMM, optical comparator, height gauge |
Materials
Materials for mil-spec parts
Mill certificates traceable to heat number on all batches. If your contract carries DFARS 252.225-7009 (specialty metals: titanium, many steels, nickel and cobalt alloys), say so in the RFQ so the supplier quotes compliant bar with melt-source certs. Aluminum is not a specialty metal.

Finishes
Finishes and post-processing
Heat treatment, anodizing (Type II / Type III hardcoat), black oxide, passivation and powder coating are handled by the supplier in-house or through its vetted local partners, with a certificate of conformance per lot. State whether drawing dimensions apply before or after finishing.
| Finish | Typical callout | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Anodize Type II (sulfuric) | MIL-PRF-8625 Type II | Aluminum housings, brackets, dyed or clear |
| Anodize Type III (hardcoat) | MIL-PRF-8625 Type III | Wear surfaces, rails, mounts |
| Chemical conversion coating | MIL-DTL-5541 | Electrical bonding surfaces, paint base |
| Black oxide | MIL-DTL-13924 | Carbon and tool steel parts |
| Passivation | AMS 2700 / ASTM A967 | Stainless steel parts |
| Powder coating | Buyer spec | Enclosures, field kit hardware |
| Heat treatment | Buyer spec, cert per lot | Tool steel, 4140, 17-4 class parts |

- Tactical accessories (rails, mounts, non-firearm)
- Optics enclosures and camera housings
- Communications equipment chassis
- UAV and unmanned platform structural parts (not export-controlled)
- Field-deployed kit hardware
Out of scope
- Firearm components (receivers, barrels, fire control)
- Munitions, ordnance, explosives hardware
- Missile / rocket airframe structural parts
- Night vision optics / military-grade IR
- Encryption hardware

FAQ
Capability questions
What files should I send for a mil-spec CNC quote?
A 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing (PDF, DWG or DXF) at the current revision, with material spec, finish spec, thread callouts, tolerances and quantity. Add FAI and certification requirements and a statement of the part's export classification. We reply within 24 business hours.
Can matched suppliers apply MIL-PRF-8625 anodize and MIL-DTL-5541 chem film?
Yes, suppliers arrange Type II and Type III anodize, chem film, black oxide, passivation and powder coating in-house or through local finishing partners. Ask for the finisher's certificate of conformance per lot, and state whether the drawing dimensions apply before or after finishing.
Which parts are out of scope?
Firearm components, munitions and ordnance hardware, missile or rocket airframe parts, night vision and military IR, encryption hardware, anything ITAR or USML controlled, anything Wassenaar dual-use restricted without a licence and anything for end-user-restricted destinations.
